Serbian Historiography Today – Reassessment

Abstract: In this paper, the author explains the motives and contemplations that inspired the Institute for Recent History of Serbia to organize a series of conferences to discuss, through various aspects, the situation in Serbian historiography today. Starting from his own, long-standing experience in journal editing and writing reviews, the author considers the problems of reviewing and different practices prevailing in the journals. Insisting on a dialogue and developing scientific criticism as a prerequisite for the credibility of a single historiography should be a constant process. The use of the results of Serbian historiography in the world and their assessments are not, however, closely related to its scientific legitimacy, but also have roots in the social conditions that have prevailed since the early 1990s.

Key words: Serbian historiography, Serbian historical journals, peer review, “partisanship”
